Holly takes the Gold!
Hairdressing student Holly Burke was celebrating with her classmates this week after winning a gold medal at the Youth Winter Olympics in Seoul!
16-year-old Holly was cheered back into the classroom this week after triumphing in the mixed team curling competition in Korea.
“It was an insane feeling to win Gold,” she said. “When I realized we won, I couldn’t believe it. It was just awesome. I’ve taken the medal off to sleep, but that’s about it!”
She took up curling just five years ago, after a holiday to Portugal. “The Winter Olympics were the only thing on TV in English, and I just fell in love with curling and decided to try it out when I went home.”
After this triumph, her next target is to compete in the full Olympics. “That’s what I’m aiming for! It’s a big target, but this has been an amazing starting ground!”
The hairdressing student also paid tribute to her lecturers. “I love my course here. It’s built my confidence so much. I couldn’t have done what I did without them. My tutors have been amazing; they helped me study around my training, and I couldn’t recommend the college enough. If someone has something like this they want to do, college is an amazing option.
Lecturer Jacqui Ward said: “We as a team are absolutely delighted for Holly; she is an inspiration to all her peers and all of the Hairdressing Team. We have managed to accommodate Holly's timetable to support learning and teaching. She has managed to juggle her studies and her passion for curling.”
