SWAP Access to Primary Teaching

Overview

SWAP Access to Primary Teaching is a course that will prepare you to embark upon a new career in education.

With direct progression to university degree programmes available, you will study National 5 Mathematics along with a range of social sciences units and core skills.

The programme has been designed in association with our partners at SWAPWest who have many years of experience in navigating the adult returner's journey to becoming a Primary Teacher.

Further information on SWAPWest can be found at: https://www.scottishwideraccess.org/west

Entry

While there are no formal entry requirements for this programme, it has been specifically designed for adults who are looking to return to education. You should be able to demonstrate the relevant life skills for a career in the teaching profession. Some prior qualifications may also be useful as entry is competitive.

Applicants should have been out of education for at least three years. They should also have - or be - in the process of securing ‘shadowing’ work experience with a local primary school or relevant voluntary group – this is imperative for the university interview process which usually takes place around November/December.

Although no formal PVG check will be required for entry to NCL, candidates should be aware of the requisite PVG requirements when seeking to secure relevant work experience and when applying for Primary Education degree courses at university.

It is expected that applicants will be highly committed to a career in Primary Teaching and that they will show individual potential with regard to the skills and professional attributes required.

If English is your second language, you should have English language skills equivalent to IELTS 5 or National 5 ESOL (grade B or above).
