SWAP Access to Paramedic Science
Overview

As a partner with the Scottish Wider Access Programme, we have devised a course programme that will fulfil the requirements for progression for mature students whose ultimate career goal is to be a Paramedic. The course is an ideal stepping-stone for an individual who wishes to gain entry to a degree qualification without the need for sitting formal SQA Higher-grade qualifications.
Entry
This is a highly competitive course and you must have some experience working as a qualified First Aider, working within a care setting or have voluntary experience with local First Aid Responder groups or similar. People with experience working in other uniformed organisations will also be strongly considered.
You should have a minimum of 4 clear years out of formal education (ideally 5 years), historical qualifications from school would be of interest to us, however no formal qualifications ae required . You should be able to demonstrate a good level of work ethic from references and attendance records and demonstrate a strong interest in the Biological Sciences, Healthcare and a firm career aspiration.
You will need to be physically and mentally fit as this is a very challenging course, leading to a fast-pace, physically and mentally demanding career. Ideally, you should have excellent memory skills and the ability to adapt quickly to new environments and situations. You should also be self-motivated and confident.
Although you may continue with a part time job you should ensure that you have time to commit to your studies, both inside and outside of any classroom.
You will be interviewed and skills will be tested during the interview period.
You will need to supply at least one reference that show your ability to work, learn and be successful.
A full & detailed personal statement must be completed when applying, you must highlight your intended future study goal and career within your statement giving clear indications why you wish to change career.
Progression into any study within the NHS is subject to PVG Disclosure Scotland Criminal Records checking. This check will not be carried out by the college but you must be aware of this before embarking on any career within the NHS as an Allied Health Professional. You will be asked to complete a Criminal Record

The course consists of units that include:-
- Anatomy and Physiology – Level 5 and 6
- Higher Care: Development and Behaviour, Social Influences & Values and Principles
- First Aid
- Mental Health Understanding
- Chemistry – Level 5 and 6
- Numeracy and preparation for the numeracy entry exam
- Human Biology: Human Cells
- Communications and Literature 1
Although Paramedic Science is the main goal for most, you will be able to apply to related courses that are equally as interesting and in demand, such as, podiatry, food science and nutrition, biomedical science, bioscience, microbiology, nursing, etc.
